چکیده

An infant infected with HIV presented with fever, tachypnoea, hypoxia, and radiological evidence of bilateral pneumonitis. Fluorescent antibody technique identified Pneumocystis carinii within 24 hours from secretions obtained by nasopharyngeal aspiration. This rapid, non-invasive method should be the first line investigation of suspected P carinii pneumonia in immunocompromised patients.

Detection of pneumocystis DNA in nasopharyngeal aspirates of leukaemic infants with pneumonia.

The technique of polymerase chain reaction was used to detect Pneumocystis carinii DNA in nasopharyngeal secretions of three infants with leukaemia who had the clinical features of P carinii pneumonia. The use of this non-invasive technique allowed the early diagnosis and treatment of these infants whose protocols did not include the use of prophylactic co-trimoxazole.

Unsuspected Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia at presentation of severe primary immunodeficiency.

BACKGROUND Pneumocystis carinii is an important pathogen in immunodeficiency but may be an unrecognised cause of respiratory compromise. OBJECTIVES To ascertain the incidence of P carinii pneumonia (PCP) at presentation of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), whether it had been diagnosed, and the effect of treatment on outcome. SETTING The supraregional paediatric bone marrow transplan...

Tracheal catheters in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome for the diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.

The diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) often requires bronchoscopy. In 82 consecutive human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients suspected of having PCP, we passed a 14-F catheter into the trachea under local anesthesia without intubation, instilled saline solution, and then collected the secretions by aspiration. Bronchoscopy with collection of bronchial washings and p...

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: an atypical presentation with lung cavitations.

The differential diagnosis of lung cavitations is very broad. We report a case of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) with lung cavitations on the chest X-ray in a patient with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We discuss the differential diagnosis of such an X-ray pattern and emphasize that multiple cavitations can be a roentgenographic presentation of PCP.
